What separates the men from the boys: When people with something critical to say remain silent

Every now and then I get news about the who's-who (and some who think they are a who who's a who) of various message forums and online groups "grumbling" about the success of GRP, its network of bloggers, and its community of critical no-nonsense thinkers who've gravitated around its cutting-edge insight, and the profile we've so far built on the Net. And then I check out the comment threads of Get Real Post and wonder...

If there are so many of these yahoos who supposedly beg to differ to the ideas we put on the table to be subject to public scrutiny, the question to ask is: Where are the comments that aim to challenge these views?

Being surrounded by people who agree with me all the time is starting to get boring.

But then I recall the way Filipinos tend to apply a passive-aggressive approach to dealing with most in-your-face challenges and I realise, that this is all really not very surprising. It's one thing to grumble amongst one another. But what separates the men from the boys is:

(1) the ability to clearly articulate the specific points around which they beg to differ;

(2) the courage to express this view in territory outside of their comfort zone; and,

(3) the stability and presence of mind to remain consistent in the way they apply their thinking faculties in the course of the ensuing discussion.

Of course, these are Filipinos we are dealing with -- a people who time and again have demonstrated a consistent inability to think their way out of a paper bag. So I suppose it is a bit of a pointless exercise to expect much in the way of any sort of sporting challenge coming from rabble who spend their days in online love-ins amongst other like-minded folk baking their inbred ideas.

  1. I'd think this best describes the atmosphere of that group:

  2. There is no point arguing with you because it is a complete waste of time. You can keep on spreading the hate but we will not hate you because that will lower us to your level.

  4. Proud Pinoy,

Don't buy into Benny's propaganda. Notice how he uses the words: various message forums and online groups "grumbling" about the success of GRP.

He asks for specific examples when he himself has none. Like all his arguments, he is nothing but hot air. Its all rhetoric dude. In fact, we Pro-Pinoys do not "grumble" for he has no success to speak of. We actually feel sorry for him that he has to spend much of his time putting people down so that he can feel better about himself.

Benny, why don't you just blog about Australia?

  5. Nah. Blogging about the Philippines is a lot more fun. Lots more stupidity to write about. Easy pickin' kung baga. :-D

  6. Bayanihan,

    Talking about putting people down.
How sure are you that "Benny" has no success to speak of.
If he starts speaking about his success ano naman ang sasabihin nyo: ang yabang naman nito.( sinabi mo nga pala by saying everything is "rhetoric, hot air")
That is one reason why I do not think credentialism is equal to credibility.

  7. About this spreading the hate stuff.
You can call something stupid without hating someone or anything. We do it all the time by saying ay tanga, ang tanga tanga naman, patawa naman ito and whatnot.

  8. Love your prose, benign0. The sentence "So I suppose it is a bit of a pointless exercise to expect much in the way of any sort of sporting challenge coming from rabble who spend their days in online love-ins amongst other like-minded folk baking their inbred ideas." had me in stitches.

  9. Thanks Greg. The irony here is that my best work is inspired by the worst in Da Pinoy.

  10. Dear Bayanihan,
I would love benignO to turn his attention to Australia. There are certainly plenty of targets for him to choose. However we are blessed with critics willing to point out the failings of our imperfect society and there is already robust debate about the environment, health, social welfare, education, the legal system, media and of course sport. The same cannot be said for the Philippines. The quality of political debate to my mind is disappointing. I've just returned from the Philippines and was depressed by the lack of any progress since my first visit 15 years ago. The poor are just as desperate and the middle class seem unwilling to engage with any serious debate about the state of the country. The political process is mired in conspiracy theories and chismis. What chance is there of change unless there are people willing to pose challenging questions? They may well be provocative and even offensive to some, but there has to be some way of kick-starting a constructive debate about the current state of the nation.

  11. Baking in-bred ideas is not the monopoly of anyone. GRP's (i.e. benign0's) numerous yes-men are a prime example of that. lol
