Noynoy Aquino and his Porsche

When the President of the Philippines buys himself a Porsche, his spokesman needs to emphasize that "personal funds [were used] for the purchase". That's the sort of society that the Philippines is -- a society where presumption of thieving intent always trumps benefit of the doubt. It seems that even the squeaky clean image of President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III fails to break a mindset forged in the furnace of banal thievery of Philippine society.

I maintain that Noynoy can do whatever he wants to do with his money. His inability to put his private tastes on hold for the six years that he will be serving as president should allow us to rest assured that he remains consistent with the bases with which we selected him to be our leader.

Lest we forget, Noynoy is The Reluctant One -- a man to whom the presidency was served on a silver platter. Perhaps, unlike other candidates who wanted the presidency really badly, and would therefore immerse themselves with gusto in the role upon acquiring it (easily stepping up from private citizenship to the top public office), Noynoy nonchalantly sauntered into that coveted seat in Malacañang while his other foot literally remained planted in his parents' ancestral house. Now he wants his other foot on the pedal of a fine German automobile -- even as hundreds of thousands of Filipinos are impacted by torrential floods all over the country.

I don't blame him. After all, how much can you do in six years in a country impoverished not within one particular period, not on account of one particular identifiable factor, and certainly not as a result of one particular person's ill intentions? And Noynoy is one man with a taste for fast cars. Let The Reluctant One be. After all, we elected him not with the sort of high expectations one could expect from a qualified leader, but for his being a pedigreed man. So why be critical now?

  1. Yeah... 'cept in the end, he still decided to run for the position anyway, reluctant or not. Tsk tsk talaga not just of him, but of what this says or has been for a long time of our society. Hay! hehe!

  2. i don't understand why people fret about it. it's his money anyway and he can do whatever he wants. life's unfair. deal with it. kung gusto nyo ng pantay pantay, donate your savings at lahat tayo tumira na lang sa kubo.

  3. His buying it is not the problem. Heck he can buy whatever he wants as long as it's not paid with taxpayers' money.

But the news that he was probably out on the tracks somewhere in Subic or Clark with his Porsche while many people are seriously having problems in the provinces re the floods and landslides is really a shame. Don't you expect more from your president? More sense of urgency/accountability/culpability? We really have a skewed culture/society/social/moral norms whatever you call it then. The world doesn't revolve around Metro Manila even though I was born and raised there. His inaction on this issue was also the topic of an editorial piece in the Inquirer, sans the Porsche topic. I didn't even have to read/know of that editorial to sense something's not quite right. If you were one of those affected by the said floods/threat of landslides with your family being evacuated/your livelihood at risk/ your kids skipping classes, won't you feel the slightest bit angry? Disturbed? Annoyed even?

Oh well. Let's just say the second anonymous comment above is symptomatic of this skewed cultural/social psyche. Mabuhay na lang kay Pilipinas kay ganda.

  5. time with movies and date in rockwell?? 2hr movie,an hour to and from, 30 minute snack, he calls it privacy and arbor dating. an hour with flooded visayas? none. For all we know is the hanjin president is upset for wasting travel time and missing opportunity to meet him. A breeze in the people of the year award. Private time? No sir, you are the president. Number 1 public servant. No time to even buy and sell a car weekly movies?? Not now, probably when you were a lawmaker.. Please. You promised this part of your life for us.

  6. affluent symbolizes the marcoses, cojuancos, lopezes, aquinos and now the sole pangilinan. except manny P. Haciendas and sequestered lands. Maybe timing is at fault. He can always buy it after his term. He has the Number 1 car in the country if not enough. Well probably age for what he know is catching up, he couldn't own it when he's 60 after his term. We all make sacrifices for the country anyway, us whipped by high prices, unlucky ones, hunger, it would be hard for a former senator and president's to feel the hardtimes, there's none in the US where our hero ninoy took refuge. Did you really feel the hardships your countrymen felt before and presently undergoing now? have you even been to the flooded areas even for pic ops? Just give it some time away from your blanket

  8. Noynoy Aquino is a bachelor and the most powerful man in the country. Add a Porsche to that mix and you get a chick magnet. Trouble is, getting laid can be a bit of a challenge for someone in his line of work. And the tragic thing there is, by the time he leaves Malacanang, he will be six years older, probably have less hair, probably walk with a bit more of a stoop than his current stoop, and will most likely have to move back to his mommy's house.

Then again, a shortage of available chicks has never been a problem associated with the Philippines.

  9. It's no big deal, as long as it's not taxpayer's money.

  10. It's his money anyway so who cares? The guy is a bachelor, at least he is not stealing.

  11. frankly, i don't care what he does with his personal life. i don't waste time critiquing him as much as others do who somehow made it their life's work in criticizing every public figure of every minor flaw they can see. must be one the perks of anonymous criticism. they could at least offer their champion as the better alternative, so we might be convinced on the next election.

though i cannot be convinced that there is any one person at all for the job that is unmarred with flaws, as i am being led to believe. i didn't vote for noynoy, but why should i be bothered with his buying decisions.

if I can afford a porsche, i would buy one too. i won't let anyone stop me.

  12. kung pumunta si noynoy sa mga binaha? may magagawa ba sha. hindi diyos si noynoy. kaya sha may mga tao under him. kaya may mayor, baranggay captain, congressman na may malaking pork barrel.

mas nakakahiya maging presidente ka ng first world country, bibili ka ng exotic na sasakyan at may mahirap pa rin sa bansa mo.

  13. P-noy already explained how he got his 3rd hand PORSCHE.

The Problem here is not P-noy, its majority of the feeble-minded and awkward thinking FLIPinos who love to feast on other peoples' lives even the issue is already cleared.

"Get Real Filipinos" change yourselves and stop being the same - GROW UP! P-noy can't do it alone if FLIPinos attitude is still the same... and majority is still the same.

  15. Magaling lang talaga ang karamihan Pinoy ... Laging bida ... puro sat-sat.

  16. The issue here is not the money he spent for the car. This is not about "crab mentality". The issue here is his decision making. It just goes to show that Pnoy is immature and impulsive. It goes to show that he is impatient and has no ability to delay gratification or pleasure. This goes to show that he is insensitive to the plight of the Filipinos who are mired in poverty. It goes to show that he is not the right man for the job. I expect even more idiocy from Pnoy in the future. Woe is the Philippines.

  17. Its not about Pnoy Sir One true master, Its always about the Filipino sheep. They are the problem here. Its not about Gloria Macapagal, or Pinoy or the Ampatuans, They are just responsible people who control irresponsible people below a hierarchical society.

The matrix was/is always like this. And if you can see, Pnoy delaying his self gratification so what??? Its not about being good/bad here. Its all about you!! Like you people, crying out loud and ask for justice/fairness!!! Cry baby nation will sink!!! And hope is useless!!

  18. PNoy has bad decision making skills, not enough punctuality, and also promises too much. I personally would have wanted letting GMA continue her term rather than see the Philippines go into so much worse.

  19. It just shows that the president, whatever he/she wants, has to have balls and sticks to the decision, whatever it is. Unlike our current Porsche-buying indecisive one.

  20. OMG!! OMG!! duh?? ang mga pilipino ngayon ay sadyang napakabobo.. nagpapadala sa emosyon ng isang INCOMPETENT na lider.. haist!!!!! naalala niyo pa ba to?? "KUNG WALANG CORRUPT, WALANG MAHIRAP".. di niya man lang naisip "KUNG WALANG MAHIRAP, WALANG CORRUPT".. punyeta!! the BARRACK OBAMA OF THE PHILIPPINES.. puro salita wala naman sa gawa.. PEOPLE POWER IS A BIG JOKE!! AQUINOS IS A BIG JOKE!! ALL OF THEM ARE BIG JOKE!! A BIG BIG JOKE FOR THE PHILIPPINES..!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Noynoy is slowly being influenced by his barakda of thieves and incompetents to become like them. He is now being lured into the sphere of high-living. Unfortunately, he does not have the capacity to think and analyze his role and position. To all of you who think buying a Porsche is harmless act, THINK AGAIN. One of the many things Noynoy and his three-headed communications group are woefully weak at is understanding the importance of
SYMBOLISM and the messages they send out to the public; a Porsche sends all the wrong messages.

  26. SMELL THE SWEET FUMES OF HIS 3.2L TURBO ENGINE AS YOU SIT IN YOUR HOVEL EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVE TWO UNIVERSITY DEGREES. ANYONE WHO BELIEVES THAT HIS LUXURY LIFESTYLE IS FUNDED BY PRIVATE FUNDS IS EITHER SERIOUSLY DELUDED OR SERIOUSLY IGNORANT. THIS NEW CAR WILL BAG HIM SOME SERIOUSLY HOT BABES.

  27. the question is....why didn't he bought a porsche car in his 20's or early 30's???i guess that luxury car is really hot to a young bachelors not to old bachelors.....

  28. Is there a receipt? Could a contract of sale be produced? Otherwise, how could anyone say that the Porsche was bought? Couldn't it have been given to P-Noy as a gift? But wer it given as a gift, for what, in return?
