Kudos to Kanin Club restaurant!

Image
I'm not a food writer by any stretch of the imagination, but I just have to do a hats-off to this resto Kanin Club. I had the pleasure of having lunch at their Westgate Mall, Alabang branch one weekend and it was by far the best meal I had during my short stay in Manila. If I recall right, I had a green mango salad (I forget what it is called), some sort of grilled talong (eggplant) thing-a-ma-bob, some tinola (chicken soup), and what looked like a deep-fried tilapia that had been pulled apart into a flower-like sculpture. The turon (deep-fried banana, I think it is) topped by a scoop of mango ice cream was great too.

Just saw the photo below making the rounds on Facebook. The album from which it was lifted was posted by the Animal Welfare Coalition (see also AnimalWelfare.com.ph ). The caption of the album indicated that the photos were "proudly posted" by a certain Bigleng Arcilla on "November 8" and whose friends include "Jeff Pecson, Jannella Cruz, Ar Tubaces Jr., Arian Canlas, Jhenypher Sison, Aljon Masiclat, Jerome Cabuso, Aldwin Arcilla, Darwin Delos Reyes, Emanuel Dane Sevilla, Al Mungcal, Aw Arcilla".

An Associated Press report highlights that this study is built upon an already identified trend over the last 25 years that shows a 10 to 20 percent reduction in the rate of growth in rice farm yields in some parts of Asia.

The moronisms of the "rotting rice surplus" debate

Image
President Benigno "P.Noy" Aquino III's people continue to gripe about excess "rotting" rice in National Food Authority warehouses even as a shipment of 20,000 metric tonnes of rice ordered last April arrived. Of course Malacanang wastes no opportunity to blame the previous administration as Asia News reports ...

The NFA does not just import rice for the heck of it

Image
One of the key highlights of President Benigno "P-Noy" Aquino III's State of the Nation Address (SONA) was how the National Food Authority (NFA) "over-imported" rice. Supposedly this resulted in tonnes and tonnes of it rotting in their warehouses while impoverished Filipinos starved. Not so fast, according to former Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap , who reminded the President that...
